Careers and University Guidance

The Careers and University Departments, at both the Barra and Urca sites, offer students the information and support necessary for applications to universities across the world.

Our team of advisers and tutors provides expert assistance throughout our students’ school careers, ranging from initial advice to younger students on their academic options, to assistance for older students with their university application processes.

As part of the process, we facilitate preparation for university entrance, including practice interview for British universities (particularly Oxford and Cambridge Universities), Brazilian Vestibular and ENEM examinations, as well as ACT and SAT tests and Essays for USA universities. We regularly schedule practice sessions and mock examinations, to help ensure that our students have the best possible chance of success.

At TBSRJ, we have dedicated staff to support students in their development and endeavors towards careers definition and university entrances. Ms Susana Vaz, at the Zona Sul School
(careers_urca@britishschool.g12.br), and Ms Patricia Furtado, at the Barra School (careers_barra@britishschool.g12.br) work in collaboration with teachers and students in supporting their paths once they graduate from school.

Each year, we provide numerous opportunities for our students to meet visiting representatives, from Brazilian and from international universities. We also provide university prospectuses for research purposes, and our students greatly appreciate our annual programme of guest speakers and educational fairs.

In their final years at TBS, we offer our students considerable personal advice regarding the suitability of specific courses and institutions, in the light of their individual career objectives. Whilst we always encourage our students to be ambitious with their aspirations, we also encourage them to make realistic choices that match their personal academic profiles. Our expert staff regularly counsel each student on an individual basis, as well as holding meetings with parents to discuss recommended options.

As a result, our students enjoy a very high acceptance rate with their university applications. However, our guidance services do not stop there. Our staff are always available to support our alumni, who return for further advice on a regular basis.

“The IB was a very enriching experience for me. It not only promotes global and social awareness, but it also helps to solidify a very strong base for admissions into several universities and for my future studies.”

Maria Cecília Marques – Class of 2016

Work Experience

Throughout their time at TBS, many students are encouraged to identify their potential career interests, and seek work experience in a relevant professional area. We especially encourage students to do this during the Pre-IB Programme at the end of Class 9, when students have completed their IGCSE examinations and are looking ahead to the IB Diploma.

Several students also regularly take advantage of work experience opportunities during holiday times throughout their senior years.

We are always very grateful to any parents or other members of the community who are able to offer work experience to our students. The school always tries to help students obtain placements where necessary. We are grateful for any and all support given by parents and companies in these experiences.

IB Diploma for Brazilian Universities Entrance

The IB Diploma is also as a route for students to gain an entry place at several Brazilian universities, such as, PUC-Rio, FGV, IBMEC and ESPM. Other universities in São Paulo also accept the IB Diploma as a mean to enter their institutions, replacing the need to take Vestibular or ENEM exams.

We are very enthusiastic with this current development as it acknowledges the academic rigour and value of the IB Diploma Programme offered by TBS and adopted by international schools in more than 150 countries
