Mission | Philosophy | Aims & Objectives

In order to fulfil its Mission, the School aims to:

  1. offer a coherent and integrated curriculum that will prepare our pupils for each new stage of their education until university entrance by:
    • providing a broad curriculum structure based on the National Curriculum (England and Wales), leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate (I.B.).
    • providing the basic curriculum required by Brazilian law;
    • preparing our students for university studies through a progressively academic curriculum;
    • providing additional support for entry into Brazilian universities.
  2. offer a curriculum which is appropriate and relevant, where pupils are actively engaged in the learning process by:
    • providing challenging and open-ended tasks which encourage experiment, enquiry and problem-solving and opportunities for discussion;
    • using local and concrete examples and case studies wherever possible;
    • incorporating the experiences and issues raised by community service into the various areas of the curriculum;
    • empowering students in the effective use of information, of the library and media facilities, and of Information and Communication Technology;
    • organising outdoor activities and visits;
    • periodically reviewing and updating the curriculum;
    • constantly evaluating teaching methods and strategies;
    • continually developing and upgrading equipment and resources;
    • encouraging the professional development of all staff.
  3. recognise and develop the potential of each individual by:
    • providing a wide range of opportunities within the curriculum for every student to discover and fulfil their physical and creative talents;
    • identifying and addressing the needs of individual pupils through differentiated approaches and tasks;
    • encouraging and praising effort and achievement to develop self-esteem and confidence;
    • promoting independent and critical thinking and encouraging logical reasoning skills;
    • ensuring learning is rewarding and stimulating.
    • providing a secure, structured teaching environment in which each students' self-confidence can grow;
    • capitalising on the natural curiosity of pupils.
  4. provide a safe, stimulating, and friendly learning environment by:
    • ensuring all facilities meet the highest possible standards of health and safety;
    • ensuring a clean, neat, comfortable and orderly environment;
    • providing appropriately equipped and resourced rooms;
    • maintaining interesting classrooms with lively displays and exhibits;
    • maintaining optimum class sizes;
    • being positive, supportive and encouraging;
    • developing team-work and co-operation.
  5. develop each pupil's oral and written fluency in English, the language of teaching and learning by:
    • the exclusive use of English by staff and pupils in the classroom;
    • positively encouraging students in the use of English;
    • providing every opportunity to present work orally and encourage public performances in the English language;
    • encouraging the enjoyment of reading and listening, in English, as essential skills;
    • expecting the highest standards of English from pupils and staff;
    • preparing pupils for external examinations in English;
    • maximising students' contact with English native speakers;
    • providing appropriate resources and reading materials;
    • promoting parental support and encouragement at home.
  6. provide opportunities for the further development of individual pupils' talents and interests by:
    • offering activities which stimulate further research;
    • involving students in public performance events;
    • encouraging students to participate in a wide range of extra_curricular activities regardless of their natural ability;
    • encouraging the engagement of pupils in a variety of community-oriented projects;
    • introducing pupils to the world of work through the 'Work Experience' scheme.
    • encouraging participation in individual and team sporting events;
    • exhibiting and celebrating students' work with the wider community.
  7. achieve excellent social behaviour and moral standards through self-discipline, supportive relationships and a sense of respect and responsibility by:
    • providing a clear and consistent behavioural framework;
    • explaining the rationale behind rules and expectations;
    • applying appropriate sanctions when expectations are not met;
    • reinforcing good behaviour through example and praise;
    • encouraging good manners, politeness and punctuality, and making pupils aware of the value of others;
    • providing opportunities to exercise responsibility and team-work through sports, the performing arts, community service, the House Systems and the Student Councils.
  8. encourage student responsibility and leadership, and involve students in the decision-making processes of the school by:
    • inviting students to participate in school committees;
    • encouraging the Student Councils and involving them in wider school issues;
    • keeping students informed of important school issues;
    • creating opportunities for the practice of responsibility and leadership;
    • providing channels and support for pupil participation in community service through the CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) and 'Duke of Edinburgh Award' programmes, the House Systems and other activities.
  9. cultivate and maintain the British character of the School by:
    • encouraging participation in cultural and sporting activities with a British origin or tradition;
    • inviting British visitors to the school and visiting British-based events and activities;
    • organising regular assemblies to develop a spirit of community;
    • ensuring British staff are present throughout all sections of the School;
    • arranging structures within the school which encourage a positive and healthy spirit of competition;
    • maintaining active contacts with the British community.
  10. take full advantage of our bi-cultural and bi-lingual environment to enrich the educational experience by:
    • incorporating Brazilian elements into our curricular and extra_curricular programme;
    • exposing our expatriate students to the language and culture of Brazil;
    • taking advantage of educational opportunities within the city of Rio de Janeiro and beyond;
    • inviting Brazilian visitors to the school to share knowledge and experience concerning culture, traditions and history, particularly when this supports the curriculum programme;
    • celebrating Brazilian cultural and national events;
    • encouraging further integration of our school into the wider community.
  11. encourage a broad international perspective and a respect for other cultures and beliefs by:
    • drawing upon the rich mixture of cultures represented in the school population;
    • introducing material and activities about other societies;
    • adapting practices to take account of religious beliefs, traditions and customs;
    • acknowledging the value of all religious belief, and affirming the right of individuals to hold their own beliefs;
    • developing active awareness of local, national, international and global current affairs by infusing these into the curriculum;
    • providing information and advice about university studies and careers abroad;
    • organising cultural and sporting visits to other countries to support the personal and academic development of the students.
  12. involve the parents in the life and development of the School by:
    • organising regular parents' evenings and consultations;
    • inviting parents with relevant expertise into the School to support appropriate activities;
    • encouraging parents to support social and environmental projects;
    • supporting the work, activities and events of an active Parent-Teacher Association;
    • maintaining active parent input on the Board of Governors and related Committees;
    • ensuring parents are informed of the curriculum, activities, planned development and expectations of the School;
    • ensuring the parent body is periodically consulted regarding the effectiveness of the School's beliefs and practices.
