Thank you for your interest in The British School, Rio de Janeiro.  More detailed information can also be found in other areas of our  website, especially in the Prospectus, which can be downloaded from Publications.

The first step is for you to please fill in the attached ‘Application Form’ – one for each child - and send it to us together with 2 (two) 5x7 passport size photos. With this, we will be able to identify to which class* your children would probably be joining us, as well as the unit of your interest (Barra, Botafogo or Urca), and also the availability of places.

*(to understand our school class system and how it compares to the UK, to the USA and to the Brazilian class divisions, please see our comparative table here)

As we follow the southern hemisphere calendar, classes run from February to December. If your children are in a school that runs from August/September to May/June, once they arrive here they will need to step ahead or back 1 semester.  This is not a problem for the school, as we have many international children joining us all the time and we are used to it.  The decision to move ahead or back one semester is only done once you arrive, after talking to you and after they go through the entry assessment process – so we can be sure in which class to place them. So, the class they will be placed in is not based only on their age (birth date) but also on the assessment done. We also request you send to us copies of their past report cards (3 years of reports); and copies of current school work done by them (eg: samples of Maths, English, Sciences – it can be anything such as copies of tests, exercises, notebooks, etc..); as well as recommendation letters.

If you are moving to Rio, just so you can prepare yourself, please be informed that, for the actual enrolment (matíicula)  in the school, you will need to bring the following documentation (please note item 5 which is very important):

  1. A photocopy of your child’s birth certificate.  In the case of foreign children, an official translation to Portuguese is required by Brazilian law. (translation can be done in Brazil)
  2. Two photographs of your child (3 x 4 cm size).
  3. A photocopy of your child’s vaccination card.
  4. For foreigners only: photocopies of the identification pages of the child’s and parents´ passports.
  5. For pupils transferring from other schools: previous school transcripts (histórico escolar), with a statement of the pupil’s final grades from the beginning of his/her formal education at age 6 to the most recent grade.  For pupils coming from abroad (including Brazilians), school transcripts must be officially acknowledged by the Brazilian Consulate in the country of origin and officially translated to Portuguese (translation can be done in Brazil).
