It is our pleasure to invite you to the eighth annual BSRJMUN (The British School, Rio de Janeiro Model United Nations) conference. This event, fully organized and run by students of the The British School, Rio de Janeiro, aims to simulate United Nations sessions where participants will be engaged in discussions related to real life contemporary issues. The conference will take place over a period of three days, from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th of May, 2010. All sessions and ceremonies will occur within the school premises in Urca very close to the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain.
Model United Nations provides students with a unique opportunity to investigate the origin and background to problems in the world today. Through arduous discussion, negotiation and debate, participants will be seeking to find solutions to issues ranging from human rights to armed conflict. This will enable them to develop a far better understanding and appreciation of global affairs.
The British School Model United Nations will be divided into 5 committees covering the following topics:
Security Council (SC) – The continuing unrest in Sri Lanka
Human Rights Council (HRC) – Gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – The growth of and access to digital technology.
Historical Security Council (HSC) - O Surgimento do Muro de Berlim (in Portuguese)
Special Committee – The American Civil War
This year we will be holding a special historical committee based on the American Civil War 1838-1845 which involves students representing ministers from the Confederacy in the South and Union in the North. . These two committees will be set just before the outbreak of the war where the ministers will be discussing possible measures and actions to be taken, in light of the actual historical record. The ministers will be selected through an application process separately from the regular application. If your student wishes to take part in this committee, please request the special application.
Over the course of the three days there will be 6 debating sessions where delegates will hopefully reach a consensus and produce a resolution on these important issues. In addition there will be an opening and closing ceremony and a cocktail party on the first evening. Lunch and snacks on all days of the conference will be provided free of charge. If you would like to send a delegation from your school and participate in the conference, please could you send an e-mail to confirm your interest and fill in the attached application form by 7th May, 2010. Further details of the conference agenda will be sent on to you on receipt of your intention to participate.

We very much look forward to seeing you in May,
Best wishes,
Luiz Guilherme Rodrigues Dave Williams
