Stephen Hawking, born in 1942 (300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England, has come to be thought of as the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein.

Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe - Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, space and time, the Big Bang, Black holes. In his own words, his goal is to achieve "complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

Mr Hawking remains extremely busy, despite being afflicted by Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that affects muscle control) for which he uses a wheelchair and speaks through a computer and voice synthesizer.
