The first ever Model United Nations Conference at The British School was held in 2003 and involved a total of 75 delegates representing 19 countries. Four schools participated - our own, Stº Inácio from Botafogo, Colégio Laser from São Lourenço and Northlands School from Buenos Aires . The weekend was an intellectually stimulating event, with debates involving the Palestine/Israel conflict, global warming, the Kashmir region and nuclear proliferation and Biotechnology. The committees were directed by a combination of Class 11 and ex-students, which demanded the most of their intellectual and organizational abilities.
The weekend was divided into six intense debating sessions (each of which was three hours in length) and delegates were challenged with the task of writing meaningful resolutions to suggest a course of action for the United Nations. Resolutions were then mailed to the actual UN.
The opening ceremony was honoured by the presence of the deputy British Consul Gery Juleff who addressed the students. To provide time for relaxation and socialisation, a disco was held on Saturday night open to all students, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. The event was also well publicized thanks to the sterling efforts of press officer Roberto Szatmari.
The event was an outstanding success and praise should go to all students who took part for their dedication and enthusiasm. I would particularly like to thank the directors, John Mills, Paulo Anderson, Daniel Taylor, Felipe Teixeira, Daniel Woodrow, Claudine Marger and Maciej Zawila for all their tremendous efforts in getting the conference orgbanised and doing such a professional job during the debating sessions, not to mention the excellent speeches they gave during he opening and closing ceremonies. Last but by no means least our secretary-general Clarissa Gandour who was simply magnificent in everything she did, from publicizing and letter writing, to looking after our visitors and for giving the event a truly professional touch.
Congratulations to all on a tremendous first BSRJMUN
