Welcome to the official website of The British School, Rio de Janeiro.  Whether you are an existing or prospective member of our community, or simply interested in learning more about our school, I am sure you will find the various pages and sections of our website to be informative, useful and helpful.

Our vibrant co-educational, day school has an international enrolment of over 2000 students from more than 60 different nationalities ranging from the ages of 2 to 18 years. Our programme of study is delivered in English and is based on the UK National Curriculum (for 2 to 14 year olds), Cambridge IGCSE examinations (for 14 to 16 year olds) and the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma (for 16 to 18 year olds). In recognition of our location and host country we integrate aspects of Brazilian culture, language and education into our programme which ultimately fulfills the requirements of the Brazilian Diploma. Our graduating students enter universities and colleges around the world, principally in the UK, North America, Europe and, of course, Brazil.

The British School, Rio de Janeiro operates as a non-profit organisation. As such, the school continually invests in well-qualified staff and their training, curriculum development, resources, technology and infrastructure, including new buildings. Over the past years, The British School has expanded to incorporate 3 separate sites within Rio de Janeiro: a unit in Zona Sul (split into two sites: Botafogo and Urca) and a newly developed unit in Barra, west of the main city.

The British School has an exciting future with further planned growth at the Barra Unit and many educational initiatives which will sustain it as a leading international school and, indeed, one of the largest in South America. The school is proud of its vision of “a caring community, striving for excellence where every individual matters.”

Personally, it is a great honour for me to undertake the role of Director of The British School, Rio de Janeiro from January 2012 after previous international school leadership posts in the Middle East and Asia. I have the privilege of following on from Paul Wiseman OBE who gave more than 20 years of outstanding and loyal service to the school and has been responsible for much of its development and success.
