From the Chair of the Board of Governors

Chris McLauchlan2

Welcome to the website of The British School, Rio de Janeiro. Brazil and Britain have a long relationship. In 1808 the British Royal Navy provided an escort to the Portuguese Royal Court as they traveled from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro to avoid Napoleon’s incursions. In gratitude the British community were granted certain privileges to which we can trace the early beginnings of our School.

The British School, Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1924 and has grown steadily over the years from its origins at the British Community site of the Anglican Church, Christ Church, in Botafogo. Today the School is present in three locations, Botafogo, Urca and Barra da Tijuca. The School counts amongst its students and alumni citizens of many nations from around the world. Many alumni have gone on to higher education in Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. The School wants its alumni to be well rounded, caring, open minded, engaged and inquisitive world citizens who themselves want to make a positive contribution to society.

I encourage you to explore our website, read about our students and get in touch with us to learn more about the possibilities for your children at The British School, Rio de Janeiro.
